What indeed! Most women experience The Change individually, each with their own share of multiple symptoms. One woman told me the only way she knew she had gone through The Change was that she stopped menstruating; she had no symptoms. She is the only woman I’ve met like that, though I’m sure there must be others. For me I had nearly every symptom in the book.
It was in my late 30’s when I realized something felt very different going on in my life. I suddenly craved sweets for the first time and ate nearly a pint of frozen yogurt nightly, thinking I couldn’t gain weight from it. Was never able to gain weight, had always been a skinny rail, but in three months gained 20 pounds. Coca Cola commercials would make me sentimental and I would break down in tears. Then there were headaches, muscle aches, irritability for no apparent reason, then guilt for being irritable, then paranoia, then weepy, a/k/a an emotional roller coaster.
On going to my gynecologist to ask for hormone testing, he said I was too young to begin the change. He knew me for years as prim and proper. But when I forcefully grabbed his arm, shouting: “Don’t tell me that!” – stunned, he realized the face of the beginning Change, and agreed to do testing.
That weekend I went to the nearest Barnes & Noble. Found the section on Perimenopause and Menopause. Grabbed as many books as I could carry, and in a corner of the floor spent the day reading. Reading many correlations with what I was experiencing, after several hours, I left armed with books, and determined to get out from behind the eight ball.
